The contrast between Brands Hatch and Donington couldn’t have been any greater! From -1 deg C to + 26 deg C, and from disappointment to sheer delight, last weekend’s racing more than made up for last month’s set backs.
For the first time we entered Roadsports which takes all makes of cars and puts them on track for a 45 minute endurance race with a mandatory 1 minute pit stop. A tactical entry into Group D (less than 145 bhp per ton) meant we were up against 4 other cars in class, although the total field was 34. To achieve the 145 bhp/ton we had to add 85 kg of ballast and I spent 2 solid days sourcing the ballast and building a frame to hold it securely to the floor. Many thanks to Robin Jones at Jones Engineering in Westwoodside for lending me the steel! It was worth it however, with a 2nd place in class and a very respectful 18th overall.
Next day saw us competing in rounds 3 & 4 of the MR2 Championship. We fulfilled our season’s goal by breaking into the top 10 in both races finishing 10th in the first and 9th in the second. RESULT! Admittedly this is slightly unrepresentative since the field had been split into 3 groups and I didn’t race against everyone altogether, but we’re taking the result as a great boost. The racing was fantastic fun the highlight for me being an overtake on a car I had been following the entire race on the last lap of Race 2.
As ever, friend and teammate David Jacobs was a massive support and it was great to have my eldest son, Paul, helping out too.
I have decided to sit out next month’s racing at Mallory Park; to me the circuit looks a bit risky for 40+ MR2s to squeeze into! The next race for VR2U Racing will therefore be at Rockingham on 10 June; I can’t wait!
